GROW MUNCH GO A HUGE SUCCESS

On Thursday Colbinabbin. Stanhope and St. Marys Primary School along with Rushworth P-12 College were treated to the first Grow Munch Go day organized by Sowing the Seeds of Wellbeing and La Trobe University Bendigo’s Health and Physical Education students.

The day aimed to promote healthy eating, physical activity and growing fruits and vegetables at school. Activities included Ultimate Frisbee, Master Chef, Food Art, Gymnastics, Pilates and Gardening. Even though we experienced four seasons in one day the La Trobe students treated our children to an amazing day that ran beautifully.

To immortalize the day St Mary’s Students were captured enjoying the day by WIN TV Shepparton, Rushworth P-12 made a full page spread in the Shepparton News and Colbinabbin students made it to the Campaspe News.

Feedback from students, parents, teachers and La Trobe has been extremely positive; the best part of the day, according to students and parents alike, being the free show bags!

The best news is we will be back next year to run it all over again! Hopefully we will be able to have more community involvement so that they day can be enjoyed by everyone!

A big thank you to Dr Zali Yager and her students for their hard work in organiseing and running the day, Keegans Nursery Stanhope for the veggie seedlings, Billabong Garden Nursery Shepparton for our “bush tucker” seedlings, Coughins IGA Rushworth and Andersons Fruit and Veg for our food and to all the schools for allowing this day to happen and be such a success.

    Go for 2 and 5

Adults are recommended to consume 2 serves of fruit and 5 serves of vegetables EVERY day. This ensures that we are consuming adequate amounts of many vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fibre everyday. A serving of fruit includes one medium piece of fruit such as an apple or 2 pieces of smaller fruits such as apricots or 100g of canned fruit or a handful of grapes. A serving of vegetables includes 1 cup of salad vegetables or ½ cup of cooked vegetables

Having an adequate fruit and vegetable intake can help:

      • Prevent some vitamin deficiencies
      • Prevent against obesity
      • Prevent constipation and other bowel disorders
      • Reduce the risk of some cancers
      • Reduce blood pressure
      • Reduce blood cholesterol levels

So this week make a conscious effort to go for 2 and 5!

      Winter warmers

Soups are a fantastic way to get your daily vegetable requirements and stay toasty and warm during those cold winter months.
They have the added bonus of being able to be made in bulk and frozen in individual portions to be brought out on those nights where the flu has set in or you just want a quick and easy meal.
Don't forget to get the kids involved in deciding what types of soups to make, buying the ingedients and making the soup.
For recipe ideas take a look at the Winter Warmer Soup Recipe's folder in SkyDrive (right hand side of home page)
