    Go for 2 and 5

Adults are recommended to consume 2 serves of fruit and 5 serves of vegetables EVERY day. This ensures that we are consuming adequate amounts of many vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fibre everyday. A serving of fruit includes one medium piece of fruit such as an apple or 2 pieces of smaller fruits such as apricots or 100g of canned fruit or a handful of grapes. A serving of vegetables includes 1 cup of salad vegetables or ½ cup of cooked vegetables

Having an adequate fruit and vegetable intake can help:

      • Prevent some vitamin deficiencies
      • Prevent against obesity
      • Prevent constipation and other bowel disorders
      • Reduce the risk of some cancers
      • Reduce blood pressure
      • Reduce blood cholesterol levels

So this week make a conscious effort to go for 2 and 5!

      Winter warmers

Soups are a fantastic way to get your daily vegetable requirements and stay toasty and warm during those cold winter months.
They have the added bonus of being able to be made in bulk and frozen in individual portions to be brought out on those nights where the flu has set in or you just want a quick and easy meal.
Don't forget to get the kids involved in deciding what types of soups to make, buying the ingedients and making the soup.
For recipe ideas take a look at the Winter Warmer Soup Recipe's folder in SkyDrive (right hand side of home page)

      Start Small

If you are interested in growing your own vegetables but just don't think you have the space why not go mini?

There are mini vegetable varieties that wont take up much room and can even be grown in pots!

Oasis Seedlings stock a range of mini vegetable seedlings which include:

      • Eggplant
      • Cos lettuce
      • Cauliflower
      • Cabbage
      • Spinach
      • Beets
      • Broccoli
      • Kale

Not only do these varieties gow small, they also mature quickly so you can enjoy the fruits of your labour in a matter of weeks instead of months!

The best part about these seedlings is that they are available at Byrneside Nursery!

A convenient plant at a convenient store what more could you ask for?

Pamper and Wellbeing Day: Rushworth Shire Hall, May 1st

Friday May first saw well deserving women being pampered for the day at the Rushworth Shire Hall. It was wonderful to see so many faces with lovely big smiles after experiencing the services Rushworth and surrounds have to offer.

I was lucky enough to be invited along to provide my trusty bags of information to all who attended. A big thank you needs to go out to Healthy Food Guide magazine, Go For Your Life, Better Health Channel and Department of Health and Ageing who all generously donated resources, magazines and information. Congratulations to all who were involved in the planning of the event, especially Alana and Louise, it was an amazing day!

      Launch success

The Sowing the Seeds of Wellbeing launch went off with a bang over the Easter weekend. Thank you to all who came up and said hello, by half past one I had run out of all my information and had handed out approximately 200 bags and 100 tattoo’s. I had a wonderful day meeting new people and catching up with people I have met in my travels.

A big thank you needs to go out to Phil Dennis who volunteered his time to help on the day and to Pagan Brewis from Echuca YMCA who held the activity trailer that was a hit with the kids!

Congratulations to the Easter Festival Committee you all did a fantastic job on creating such a wonderful day full of excitement and entertainment.

      Community Workshop Questionnaires

After three long months of waiting I have finally received ethics approval which means I can now roll out community activities and data collection. This will start with a survey on what types of community workshops you would like to see happen in your community which will be in this edition of the Waranga News. If you are interested please fill out the form and send it back to me at GV Health, Coyle St Rushworth 3612. Alternatively you can access the questionnaire on our website at

www.sowtheseeds.spaces.live.com in the public folder in SkyDrive located under the guest book.
